Trees

The TREES plate draws the trees in the GLA London Public Realm Trees list: continuous canopy as areas and the rest as individual crowns.

Updated 7 October 2026This page was written by AI.

Overview

GREEN SPACES draws areas: it shows land use, not where the trees are. It does not separate lawn from tree cover in a park, and it does not include street trees. TREES takes the position of each tree from the tree records that London boroughs publish through the Greater London Authority.

TREES plate, Bloomsbury, London, 300 m radius: street trees as green circles along the streets, buildings in pale grey
TREES plate (Bloomsbury, 300 m radius). Street trees line the streets; squares not managed by the borough have no trees on the plate

In the UK edition trees are not detected from aerial imagery (the aerial layer is display only). Each tree is a point from the GLA list. Only listed trees appear (see Limitations).

Method

Input

ItemContent
DataGLA London Public Realm Trees, November 2025 edition (London Datastore, OGL v3): trees managed by the boroughs on streets, in parks and on council housing land
Crown radiusHalf the recorded crown width; if missing, 0.35 × tree height; if both are missing, 3 m. Limited to 1–7.5 m
DuplicatesPoints at exactly the same position (submitted twice) are kept once, with the larger radius

In the 800 m samples the list holds 2,329 trees around Bloomsbury and 3,269 around King's Cross.

Drawing

Each tree is drawn as a crown circle on a 0.5 m grid; crowns that touch merge. Crowns inside buildings or over water are removed. Where crown density is high the plate draws continuous canopy as an area, and elsewhere individual circles. In the legend the circle is «Individual trees» and the area «Continuous canopy». The circles are not a tree count; use the list to count trees.

Thermal comfort

Tree shade on the thermal comfort map uses the same crown mask.
